Home schooling students who want to take GCSE qualifications (which usually last two years, and in schools culminate in exams usually taken at the age of 16, in school year 11) have several options to consider. While the school norms for GCSEs are outlined above, GCSEs can in fact be taken at any age, and while some home schooled children do decide to take these exams at 16, many decide to take one or two GCSE subjects per year from the age of around twelve or thirteen up to whatever year they decide to stop, perhaps continuing on to an A Level syllabus, or opting for vocational qualifications, or deciding not to take any further examined qualifications.
At 16 some home schooled students may alternatively decide to enrol at a college – either part time or full time – to take GCSEs, that is, to end their fully home schooled education. The latter option is most often selected when home schooled students require a particular qualification for a certain career or university course.
GCSE Examination Boards are not all the Same
Parents of home schooled children who are looking at taking GCSEs should be aware that not every examination board will cover the same subject, or have the same requirements. With literature subjects, for example, boards will set different texts in their syllabi, while some boards will include coursework as part of their examination requirements but others may not.
These issues should all be researched before embarking on a GCSE course. This information can be found in most GCSE text books, but some are board-specific so be careful about buying these (and in fact many libraries stock a large variety). Another good place to look is revision guides, which tend to provide information on the which boards ask for coursework, exams, oral examinations, etc. Past papers, available in high street book shops as well as online and from the examination boards direct, are another way to gauge which board’s GCSEs you wish your child to take. There is usually a fee for these, however, so you may want to look at some online or wait until after a course decision has been made before purchasing them.
GCSE Coursework and Home Schooling
For many students coursework is a popular option as it lessens the importance of single examinations and can lead to reduced levels of stress (some marks are already ‘in the bag’ so pupils may worry less about making a mistake in an exam.) Coursework may include things like art or design and technology projects, essays, question responses or similar written work; it is carried out during the year in which GCSEs are studied and the marks from the coursework go towards a student’s final grade.
Coursework can be difficult to arrange for a home educating teacher, however, as it must be marked by a neutral person and some boards have rules about who that person can be, his or her qualifications, etc. It is best to look into this before embarking on a GCSE course which includes coursework; another option is to take International GCSEs, IGCSEs, which do not have coursework components.
Thanx for the informative post i really like his a home education on ur website will come back soon…
absolutely fab in formation, thank you, makes these decisions much easier ;)))
We are currently home schooling our 3 children. Ages 6, 12 and 14. We migrated to Nigeria two years ago and started off with an organisation called structured home learning. Which provided the syllabus and text books. Since the kids have been home schooled they have not taken any formal exams. We would like to know if you can help with pointing us in the right direction to take SAT and GCSE. Our 14 year old in just starting year 10, hence should normally be starting to choose subjects for GCSE. We would like to find out how to register him for GCSE exams. Thank you
@PKSOL. You will need to contact the various examination boards directly. The three main exam boards in the UK are AQA, Edexcel and OCR. Each board will give you details of the specification/syllabus for each subject enabling you to follow the correct topic areas etc. You will need to arrange to sit any exams at a centre (we’re not sure whether there are any outside of the UK but the board will be able to tell you). For subjects that contain a coursework element you will need to satisfy various requirements for coursework submission, authentication and moderation. Check with each of the exam boards for more information. Here are the relevant links:
AQA
Edexcel
OCR
Hi. I am looking to start home schooling my 13 year old. I would appreciate any advice out there Thanks Sukey
@Sukey. Great, we hope this site helps you.
Hi! Is it possible to do GCSEs early while homeschooled, and do you know how I’d go about setting that up? I’m thirteen years old and I’d like to be able to do my English GCSE early, possibly some others, but I’m unsure of whether or not it’s possible. Thanks.
@Skulduggery – There’s no minimum age. You’d need to contact one of the exam boards that offers the GCSE and apply for entrance at the appropriate date. You should then find details of the syllabus etc. Note however, that sometimes Universities and 6th form colleges will prefer you to have sat most of your GCSEs at one go.
Our 13 year old son s attendance in school is now 80.5% he comes home and is angry and frustrated -he has become rude to his teachers ,peers and us -I am very concerned as he says he hates school it is pooring and he is finding subjects very difficult- what should I do
@Dee. You need to speak with the school management team and welfare officer first. See whether anything has changed that they’ve noticed. If he is struggling academically, it is the school’s responsibility to address this.
Hi my 15 yr old son (16 in aug) has asperges and is currently being taught at home by a tutor the school provided he only gets 3hrs pw he is academically sound but unfortunately the amount of courseworkhe has done over the last 6 mnths for his gcse will produce a possible c-d he has problems engaging with the tutor and refuses to communicate with her can i derole him from school and take over as his tutor
Do you know if an art GCSE exam can be taken at home? My daughter is receiving home tutor (due to medical needs) and has arrangements in place for all exams to be taken at home but the school is arguing about the art exam. She can’t go in to the school and they are saying it can’t be done at home. Stalemate. Any experience?
@Mary121. There are some exceptions for children with special educational needs, so you would have to contact you local education authority before doing this.
He doesnt have a SEN statement would it still be a problem
@Poll83. It may be due to the length of the exam and appropriate supervision, really this is something that you’d need to address with the exam board.
I am thinking of home schooling my 14yr old. At the Moment he is in year 9. I dont really know where to start. How do I enter him for his exams? Do I need to ring the exam board? Do I need to decide which exam board i am going with and then follow their syllabus. Can anyone please guide me in the right direction.
@Sarah111. The main exam boards in England (where you can register, find syllabus information and past papers etc) are:
Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA)
Pearson Edexcel
Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Exams (OCR)
Joint Council for Qualifications
There are lots of home education resources and support groups to be found on the internet.
can you start homeschooling in year 10
Hi there, my 15yr old son has recently moved down from London to live with me (dad) in Brighton. We are currently going through the process of applying for home schooling as this is the best option for my son. The question I have is: can he work as well as be home schooled? I understand as he is 15 he needs a licence from the council to work but the application asks for the hours he would work around school. But he wont have a school. There dose’nt seem to be much in the way online for home schooling and working advice. I have read all the government pages I can find but a definitive answer still eludes me. If anyone has experience of this and can share any information at all I would be so grateful. Many Thanks
@stumanlye.There is no real information about the number of hours required when home schooling however, the government stipulates that as a parent, you must make sure your child receives a full-time education from the age of 5. So you should provide the same number of hours as a 15 year old in a secondary school would. These hours do not necessarily have to take place at “usual” school time (ie.9 to 4 etc).
I’ve been thinking of homeschooling a while, as a teacher/FE lecturer I saw a lot that I wasn’t satisfied with about public education. On the subject of qualifications, when we’d interview candidates for courses, someone getting their good grades over several years didn’t impress the interviewers. Home school or not. Has anyone found this was a problem?
my 15yr old daughter has been having a very rough time at school over this last 12months, the head has suggested that she be home schooled, I don’t know where to start? what forms etc. do I need and from who? how will she do her gcse s . she has already done some course work will that apply? how will she get her lessons and in what format? and her exams? please can someone help, thank you.
I’m 14 years old andcurrently in year 10. My parents are still deciding whether or not I should be home schooled. If they decide yes I was wondering if you could offer some advice on how my GCSEs would be like and where I would do them and when I could do them.
I am in the process of homeschooling my year 10 son. Going through the legal system. It appears that the only thing you have to do is inform the school in writing that they are not attending. What I would like to know is how they sit exams.
Hi thinking of home schooling my 14 year old daughter, year 10. She went Into senior school a happy vivacious child and in the last 4 years has just plummeted, no confidence, thinks she’s stupid, is stressed and I would say mildly depressed. I am so fed up of talking to school and them making promises they cannot keep. I really do not think the school system is the best place for her..but I don’t know where I stand, can I take her out, will she still be able to take GCSEs and go on to college? How do I teach her at home….can anyone please give me any advice, also is it possible to part time school? Does anyone know of any home school support groups in Wirral area?! Thank you
You should contact the various examination boards individually. They will give you all the information you need.
There are lots of support resources available on the internet and you could also try Elective Home Education Service which covers Wirral and parts of Cheshire West
craft mum / im in the same situation as yourself with my 13 year old boy its heartbreaking he has been bullied in 1st year and now in 2nd year he gets abused on a daily basis. Im in Scotland so the laws are different here but I will fight tooth and nail til I get the go ahead. Think I will probably be able to teach him better as it will a 1 to 1 !! He is a handsome good looking and very clever boy and all I can think of is that the ones that are doing this to him are jealous!! wish you all the luck and go for it keep in touch and let me know how things go!
My 15 year old can not cope with the pressures of GCSE and wishes to be home schooled. She is also suffering depression. Could you please advise if it is possible for us to find a live in tutor who would help her with her GCSE work on daily basis? Any advice and help will be greatly appreciated.
I have been home schooling my 2 children for about 8 years now. I was worried about the whole Gcse dilemma for some time. this week I’ve been looking at what is available for my oldest son, who is 16 soon. The local college offers a year vocational course, with 3Gcses to be studied alongside. Looking at the prospectus there are other Creative and media courses , that he can apply for when he completes the foundation course. also there are Access courses available that allow mature students and mature young adults to get onto a Humanities degree. So, I think education is more flexible now than it used to be. Perhaps the Uk should follow the Finnish educational system, that never tests it’s students, but only makes them sit one exam at the end of high school.
Hi I’m kirsty a mother of one son. Lately my son has been moody, depressed not concentrating on school work or homework, he has lost interest in school. He is growing up more and more each day. Every time I show concerns to the school I get fobbed off, and told not to worry he is fine. Which is beyond true, he has no interest in school, he is a shell of how he was when he started school and it is very worrying. He has always been very good at school work homework etc, but has started to lose interest in everything. Teachers haven’t noticed, but as I as his mother have. It concerns me deeply. If anyone knows the best way to pull my son out of school I would greatly appreciate it and any advice on the best homeschooling sites to go for. My son is 14 and really struggling. Please help? My son attends a Blackpool school if that helps! Thanks
Does anyone know of support for a mother who wants to Home School her 13 year old daughter in the Norwich area? From lesson plans to rotas.
Hi, I am now at my wits end. After being bullied for most of my life, through school and family, 6 years ago I made the decision to move away, although it was only to the other end of the city, to me I had made a brave move. After two tears of travelling to keep my son in the school he had always known, I decided it was best he moved to the school closer to home. 18 months ago things started to change with him, he became withdrawn, angry and disinterested in anything. I started getting phone calls from the school, he had played truant, he wasn’t getting on with his work, the school assured me there was no malice in my son he was being led astray, giving into peer pressure. I did everything I could to address this, I never once turned on my son, I’ve worked with him all the way. However a few months ago I received a text from his friend saying I needed to know stuff and to go and talk to him. In doing so I was faced with a horror story that went far back to the start of moving here. My son broke down saying he had been attending school with the notion a boy who lived by us and befriended my son had told various people in the school (before my son started) that he had sexually abused his sister and put his pet hamsters in the microwave. So when my son started the school the bullying started straight away. This had manifested for two years and has resulted in my son self harming and now in counselling. I have advised the school of this, nothing has been done, my son is still struggling and all they do is give him detentions, make him go to revision with the bullies. My son struggles to get up, no motivation resulting in him being late for school (only by five minutes) but nevertheless it’s late. The gp has shown concern and I’ve told the school but again all the do is put him in detention. I know it sounds like I am covering but I am not, I know my son is loving caring, too nice and too trusting. He’s even told me he’s not attending his prom as he has no friends to go with and he’s scared he’s going to be bullied. He’s said I’m not having you pay out expense just for me to be bullied, I rather stay at home. This is so sad and I am heartbroken. I feel like I’m sending my son in to the lions den five days per
Week and my only option is to home school him to get him safely through his exams. I too live with depression and anxiety and struggling very badly at the thought of my beautiful son dealing with this. It’s even got to the point where girls are pressuring him to perform sexual favours in order to not to be bullied. I am desperate for my son to achieve his dreams and to live in peace as his confidence is totally shot. Any advice would be great fully received and thank you for reading x
My year 9 son has battled with school over the last year! What started with absence due to illness, has escalated with a second illness that has the side effects of depression and anxiety. It has been so hard dealing with a school that have support so far, but I know they think my son is “bunking off” and are pushing for him to go to a “special school!” This is not the answer for him, some days I can’t get him out of bed to go to a school a mile away, how do they expect him to get up and go in a cab to a school nearly 15 miles away?? I’m still waiting for a referral for what was CAHMS (mental health team) though he was refused a year ago!!! I am so very worried and scared for him, but now thinking home schooling is the best way to go… But I have no idea where to start! Can anyone help please? Thank you
You sound like you need the help of an alternative supporting organisation if the school is not helping. Try Family Liveswhich also has a helpline, or the Anti Bullying Alliance
Have you spoken to your local Education Welfare Officers? They may have some suggestions to help get him back to school – long term absences become part of life and make it very hard for a child to go to school without help. If you want to home school, you should check out the many resources on the internet. Most local education authorities will also be able to point you in the right direction of home school help if you ask them.
Reading the stories on this page brings such empathy from my heart to all our kids and us parents… I never thought I’d have to deal with such disgusting bullying and uninterested teachers and school! My daughter (13yrs yr 9) has been terribly bullied. She’s a kind and caring child – tough when she needs to be – but sooooo worn down by the repetitive across the school bullying. I’ve reported a physical attack in a classroom during lesson to the police and they advised that if the bullying is across the board at the school then the best thing to be would take her out. Unbelievable! I pushed forward and became relentless with my daughter’s head of year, chasing her up, going in to school to see her and pushing her to deal with the situation. Far too little far too late was the end result. My daughter’s therapist contacted me and recommended I remove my girl for her own safety. The school were aware of this and still didn’t respond appropriately. The same school had an incident late last year when a yr 9 boy attempted to hang himself in the school at lunchtime because he couldn’t take the bullying anymore. There seems to be an epidemic of ‘bullying’ that has got out of control across the country! It’s a terrible state of affairs! My daughter is very bright, dyslexic and dyspraxic and a high achiever in the top sets and wants to learn, yet the school I’ve now taken her out of can’t/won’t/don’t have the balls/power/know how to sort out the bullying epidemic in their school. So i’m now in a situation where i’m homeschooling and desperately trying to find a way for my daughter to feel connected to other children her age while she works at home for her GCSE’s (which Im also realising is a tricky area – I’m looking at an international qualification as she can simply sit the exam and not present coursework which I’m un qualified to mark!!!) My daughter has come alive in the 4 weeks she’s been at home and is beginning to connect with herself again and not live in fear and look over her shoulder every 2 minutes! So, to all you other mum’s trying to find your own way through this, I salute you, be brave, be strong and let yourself have a cry and a rant and then get back up. You can do this and you are not alone :-)
I’m 15 years old and go to a secondary school close to where I live. All my school life I have been bullied but now it’s just getting unbearable. In primary school many names were given to me… Pathetic names really, but back then they really got to me. Secondary school year 7 was one of the most hardest, stressful, depressing years of my whole life. I was getting bullied by several people, too many to count. My mother lost her job due to illness and I was very scared for her as my mother and I were the only people living at home. I became very depressed aswell as my mother and I did not leave the house or attend school for around 6 months. My school said they would help us by sending some work home for me as I was missing so much, but they didn’t send any for the whole time I was away. I took many trips to the hospital and doctors etc. The school did not do anything at all even though I was missing important school work due to many problems resulting in me falling sick myself. I had changed as a person and became way more sensitive and uncomfortable in certain situations. Everything was “sorted” and I was on my way back into a healthy school life, getting bullied in and out the years. Now in year 10 with GCSEs on my mind 24/7 and also having to cope with the bullying again. My mother has tried her absolute hardest to do everything she can do. Now going to councilling and I’m finding it nice to be able to talk to somebody who will listen other than my mother herself. We have been to meetings, sent letters and called the school about this ongoing situation, they have come up with a “plan” but I’m not really into it. I have thought about homeschooling but cannot seem to convince my parents because there’s a whole load of work to be done and it’s pretty stressful I’ve heard. I refuse to go to school because I don’t want to go as I’m being bullied every single day without fail but still have to attend and I’ve completely lost hope. What do I do? I’m worried about my future as it is impossible for me to concentrate in school and I don’t feel safe there.
I have just written a very long post which appears to have disappeared into the ether which is a tad annoying – so will be writing lots of short ones now to make sure I dont have to re-write too much
I have a daughter who is in year 9. She is 14years old. I have had several problems with her with School bulling and not feeling like she fits in socially. I looked into other schools with many visits to her School with different problems about these issues and bullying and not fitting in Socially. After sever viewings of Schools and going to the doctors myself for help on this. We took up a offer of a different School which she started before Easter holiday’s which seemed to be all ok. Except the cost of getting her to school by train and when she goes to year 10 will have to go to the Upper School which is up the road as its a split school. Today i have had a real bad day after shopping for new School shoes for my daughter as the ones she had kickers she can not wear. After getting home from shopping i have had my daughter very upset and saying she just doesn’t want to go to school now. I have asked her about going back to her old school which she doesn’t want to. But has been been getting very upset and is still at this time of night 20.20pm. Please can you give me some advice. I am going to phone up the doctors tomorrow to get appointment about some counseling as i can’t get to the bottom of it with her myself.Like a lot of people i am worried about her exams which i don’t want her to not do as they are important. How would i go about home schooling and doing the exams when the time comes please. I thought with moving my daughter to another school was the best thing to do and with even asking the doctor his advice on doing so. But it seems the issue is running on from the old school to the new one which i thought she was ok with.
I’m home taught since I was getting bullied. Last year we looked at different schools but it turns out the one I liked I can’t go to until year ten so last year just after Easter half term my parents took me out and are now home schooling me. It’s going really well I’m in year nine now but I’m studying all of the GCSE work, I have chosen my GCSEs, computing, French, history and resistant materials aswell as triple science and obviously maths and English. I have stayed in touch with some people and I’m really look forward to taking my GCSEs.
I was going to secondary school in England as standard and then at the beginning of year 11 I had to suddenly move to Austria, leaving me with no GCSEs. Now I can’t really do the qualifications here because of language barriers and many other reasons, including that I don’t want to. I want to move back to England at 17 and do my GCSE exams and move on to A-levels and Uni, but I’m not sure what school I could go to, if I would have to pay, and if I did then if I would be able to get a student loan. Does anyone know all my possible pathways to get my GCSEs at the age of 17?
Are you a UK citizen (i.e your passport etc)? Do you have anyone who you could live with while studying for GCSEs? There will not usually be any problem with studying for these at a college but you would need to investigate payment of fees etc.
My heart goes out to you all. Please remember that your mental health and/or your child’s mental health is 1000 times more important than their ‘getting an education’. What are the GCSEs for? To expand their minds, to get a decent job, as a sign of success? None of these things will happen if they are so stressed and broken down that they can’t function. Trust your instincts, know yourself/your child and do whatever brings relief and happiness. If they survive their teens they have many years to study and explore their options. It’s not like if you miss the boat at 16 there’s never another chance. Hang on in there and focus on doing what feels right for your family and yourself. x
Hi, i have 15 year daughter who refuse to go to school. She use to go boarding school but we moved so i had to take her out and put her in a new school, because of her age and GCSEs were close school decided to drop her down a year so now she’ll be 17 by the time she’ll do her GCSEs. She’s finding it really hard to make friends she doesnt have the confidents. Weve had meetings with school they were helping but my daughter just wouldnt go school now they’ve taken her name off the school, i want my daughter to do her GCSEs but i dont know where or how to do this. Can you please advice me. Thank you
hello, so I’m 14 and ever since primary school, because of not fitting in and not feeling like myself and also bullying, I’ve wanted to be home schooled. my mum says I cant because she doesn’t know how to support me and she also doesn’t know where I would do my gcse’s. I was wondering weather anyone had any advice for me and my mother
we live in cyprus. my kids and i have english passports. does this qualify us for homeschooling? homeschooling is not allowed in cyprus. my kids go to an english private school. but its so not english as most of the kids are international and english is not their language at all. its an ok school but my kids are highly sensitive and enjoy an open minded conversation..they love spiritual conversations and enjoy reiki and meditations and often ask why is it necessary that they must be in school for so many hours learning about people who are not even alive anymore.. and why do schools complicate maths when everything is done with a calculator… they ask why they are forced to do things the way the school wants them to and wear uncomfortable uniforms.. the list is endless… i have 4 kids aged 10, 8, 6, 3 and half. obe of them wants to be an animal whisperer. two of them want ro be formula 1 racers.. and the baby wants to be a reiki master like mummy :) i just want my children not to be forced to learn about subjects that will have no use for them when they leave school. i want them to wake up comfortably in the morning and look forward to learning without pressure and competition… any advice would be appreciated greatly!
Yes contact your Local Education Authority. They will have a team of education welfare officers who should be able to help. If she’s only 15 she still has until next June (2017) to catch up with GCSEs is that not sufficient? The EWO may be able to provide details of places where you can get extra tuition.
We hope this site helps. To register for GCSEs as a private candidate, choose an exam board (in England these are: AQA, CCEA, Pearson Edexcel, Oxford, Cambridge and OCR) and check out their website. There is lots of advice on how to register. If you are doing a GCSE that has an element of course work/assessment, then you will need to have an “authenticator” who is usually your tutor or teacher (who is in regular contact with you) and who has supervised enough of your coursework material to be able to confirm that the work is your own. A relative cannot act as your authenticator. Your local council can also help with information on home schooling.
If you are living in a country you have to abide by the rules of that country so if Cyprus does not allow home schooling then you will not be able to.
My daughter is 15 and in yr10. She is due to take GCSEs next year. She has been studying core subjects, French, Geography and Textilesfir the past 2 years as part of her Ebacc options. The School have just opted into the Core 8…which means she has to drop a subject. The school are advising her to drop her Textiles…but she’s put so much work into this subject I’m not happy for her to do this!! She’s already at A* level and wants to pursue Textiles and Design at University. I’m not happy for her to drop French or Geography either!! She’s put a lot of effort into her coursework and has achieved good grades in both subjects. Can my daughter take an early GCSE to secure her French (MFL) or do it through home schooling?
Hi, I’m looking for information about studying for and completing GCSE exams online. I have no idea if it’s even possible. My twins are going to be 14 in Sept; we’ve home educated since they were tiny. We moved from the UK to the US last year but would rather they have English educational qualifications, ideally, as we plan to return to the UK at some point. Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated!
My daughter recently chose her gcse options on the advice of her teachers in the last parent teacher meeting. unfortunately one of her chosen subjects (computer science`0 was over subscribed so the school chose to give this option to i quote “the mathematicians” My daughters math marks are slightly above average but her computer skills marks were the highest in her class and in the top 20 in her year. i have tried in vain to get the school to change their mind on this as the option they have given her (geography) is he is under achieving in. i cant fathom their decision as i can clearly see computer science is my child’s strength. she has had her heart set in a carer in it to the point she has already found her work experience placement next year. so with a heavy heart i have decided to home school my child in computer science. could you please give me some advice on haw she can do her controlled assessment and where she can sit her exams baring in mind she will be a student in school still. Any help is greatly appreciated.
My daughter has taken her options ready for next year but wants to do G.C.s.e psychology. How do we go about doing this outside of school as her school only offers this as a levels. She has wanted to go into the field of psychology as her career choice for as long as I can remember.
Can you talk to the computer science teacher directly about this? They may be able to look at her previous work and exam results and make a representation on her behalf. Bear in mind that Computer Science in year 10 and 11 is different to ICT (the subject that is studied in the previous 3 years at high school and is also offered at GCSE as a separate subject in most schools). Many high schools take this same approach as Computer Science does seem to suit the mathematically minded. The information about home schooling for specific subjects will depend on which exam board you choose. AQA for example, has all it’s information here together with contact details etc.
She should still be able to take A’ level psychology at her school or another 6th form college even if she has not taken psychology GCSE. If she really wants to do the GCSE she could try evening classes, a private tutor, or follow the course at home and paying for herself to do the exam. You can find the course specifications with past papers and resource recommendations on the exam body’s website, the AQA paper for example, is here
Hi, I’m 16 years old and will soon have to go to college although I have severe anxiety and would prefer not to go but as we all know the law is we have to stay in education or training until we are 18, can I be home taught by my parents instead of attending college? Please help, thank you
Yes your parents can teach you at home, but it’s advisable to speak with your school’s careers officers and the admissions staff at the local colleges. They may be able to give you some advice on different training options or even getting help with the anxiety. If anxiety is a problem now, it could get worse as you enter employment in later life.
My sister did her GCSE and got her results today but unfortunately she got all D’s and she wants to do A-levels, teachers say she should go to a collage and do different courses like childcare, but i know she is capable of getting a better grade, she is clever but due to her illness she missed alot of time of school and she didnt put in effort. Now she wants to give her 100%. I know collages will let her retake english and math in collage but not other GCSE’s. So we decided to home tutor her for her other subjects, S o i was wondering if you could help us out and guide us, if theres any any online tutoring or one to one
I am in year 11 and wondering if i could drop out of school and do online corsework for my gcse’s and go back to school when my exams are taking place is that possible?
My son is home educated and has shown an interest in doing a Computer Science and ICT Gcse/Igcse? Is it possible to do a Gcse in these subjects (with controlled assessments) or would it have to be an Igcse? I’m having trouble finding much information on this. Thank you very much.
Hiya I’m being home schooled this year ,I’m in year 10 and wondering where to start. I would like to do fine art and media studies.
Hi My daughter has just started year 10, she hates her school and always has done, I’ve been in numerous times to try and get some help with her anxiety which school causes but to no avail, I think the time has come to consider home schooling but don’t know where to start, I would need to have someone tutor her as I work and again have no idea how to do this, I would appreciate any advice
My daughter is now 17, she has suffered with anxiety and depression since she was 11 following a traumatic event in our neighbourhood. Attendance at school has been difficult for her since then, but with the help of our local Home and Hospital Education Service, and me helping her at home, she achieved 5 GCSE’s last summer, including 2 A grades. She desperately wants to do her A level Art, and has tried to join 6th form, both last September, and this week, but she has found it impossible. I would like to know if anyone has managed to help their child achieve A level art without attending school/college.
Hi, I’ve recently dropped out of school to be tutored at home by my mum, but neither of us have a good understanding of what to do for coursework for History. Can anyone help? Thanks :)
My daughter wants to drop out of school beacuse she suffers with anxiety and finds it too much of a stressful environment. Then work from home and do online work for her gcse’s, and I will teach her. But she does gcses that require coursework and we are a bit unsure as to how to complete it without being at school.
Please see the response to @Kacey below. The exam boards are listed there and you can find information about coursework from home etc
I’m in year 11 and would like to know if I dropped out of school what would happen to all my course work? Would it still go towards my end grade or not and is if hard to get into college after dropping school
You can’t leave school until the last Friday in June. You must then do one of the following until you’re 18: stay in full-time education, for example at a college, start an apprenticeship or traineeship spend 20 hours or more a week working or volunteering, while in part-time education or training. If you are dropping out and being home educated, you should consider the options regarding continuing with your GCSEs by contacting the relevant exam boards (you’ll know these if you’ve already started your courses). Many 6th form colleges require a certain number of “points” before they’ll accept you.
thid is going to sound really bad, my son has been permanently excluded from school, he can not get in to another local school, he is in year 11, what can I do about getting him in to education? Is college an option ?
Your local education authority should be able to give you an idea of the options available to your son. Most colleges are aimed at year 12s and above but it might be worth contacting them to see if there are any study opportunities there for him until next year when he can think about either re-sitting his GCSEs or taking a vocational course in an environment more suited to him than a school.
Hi, I’m a year 11 home schooled student, however I’m worried about to take my gcse exams, can someone help me plz???
Hiya , I was just wondering if anyone could help me ? I was hoping to start thinking about my GCSES , being homeschooled I am not sure on what GCSES I can take ? Any advice will be very much appreciated ??
Hi Annie have a look at the response to @Lucy below, which gives details of the various GCSE exam boards. There is lots of information on their websites about how you can take the exams etc.
My son is in year 10 and has had a number of issues with bullying at school, so we are considering home schooling to get him through his gcse’s. What are our options? Could he start his gcse earlier?? Would he be able to study at college??
I’m 14 and was diagnosed with a chronic medical condition in 2013 (the start of year 7). I’ve missed almost all of lower school and have not had much home tutoring since I live on a small island with very little resources. I am now in year 10 and have no idea what to do, even if I were to go back to school I would be very far behind. My school is hoping for me to come in to get a few GCSE’s but I have no idea where to start. Sorry for the mini rant, I just don’t know what to do anymore
hi my daughter is currently studying her A-levels at home….can anyone advise how we get her coursework marked for her English Literature/Language A level? thank you
The easiest way to establish how to do this would be to get in touch with her chosen exam board (that sets the papers and coursework etc) directly.
Hiya I’m 18 and was home schooled for 5 years and have never taken my gcses I was just wondering where I would go to take them .
Hi i was wondering if anyone could answer my question, im homeschooled and my gcses are in May, i left school around mid year ten time, The school didnt educate very well and the teachers and students tended to bully, i am really not ready for my gcses and id like to take them when im ready, is it possible to do them when im 17 at college?

My Daughter aged 14 yr 10 has just been pulled from school unable to cope with Constant Pressure & teenage drama’s hormones. Cant concentrate & learn under those conditions. There is a good chance now she will not pass her GCSEs. Can she still go to College next Sept 2018 & re-do GCSEs or any courses or aprenteships????
My daughter has just left school half way through year 10 the school has said they are willing to take her back Feb 2018 to sit her exams how to I find correct coursework/lessons etc for the next year
My daughter got pulled from school as all the bulling and they won’t let her sit her gcse first she has been there since she started secondary school and been bullied since then but they didn’t do anything about it and she has tried other schools it’s the same so I’m trying to put her in online schooling
She needs to be undertaking some kind of education while she’s this age. Speak with your local education authority to see what options are available.
Who do I contact to get my daughter to do her GCSE
hi, I am 14 nearly 15 and I’m thinking of being taken out of school because of somethings are going on and I don’t think I can continue going but if I were going to continue studying for my maths, English and science gcse would I have to go to college and take some classes there? and how would I know which books to study from??
I’m 15 nearly 16 (year 11) and have not been going to school due to anxiety problems. My school won’t send me work to do, but they said I can go in for my exams, (which I don’t want to sit at that school). Is there any other places I can sit exams rather than a school, and would my parents have to pay for the exams?
Try contacting your local education authority (usually the county council, but if not, they will refer you to the right place) and asking them if you can take your exams elsewhere. They may be able to arrange this for you. Unfortunately we can’t say whether your parents would have to pay or not.
I am 15 years old and do not like going to school due to personal problems, my attendance is very weak and I always wake up not wanting to go. My school wont send me work to do and have threatened to take my mum to court. I hate being there and am starting to develop anxiety and depression. what should I do????
I’m a year 9 student (homeschooled till September) I am doing great it science and maths but English is something I’m stuck on anyone have any ideas what I can do?
I’m looking into home schooling but I’m doing dance and drama GCSEs how would I do them at home?
Please speak to someone at school first. Does your school have a pastoral adviser or welfare officer? They should be able to help you with your worries and anxiety. Your GP may also be able to help you with a referral for counselling, therapy or other treatment options. Please do try and share your worries rather than thinking home schooling will be a solution at this stage of education. If you are left with no option but to try home schooling, you will need to do lots of research – there are plenty of forums and resources on the Internet. The main exam boards also have information that might help.
I am 14 years old ( year 10 ) This year I am taking 3 GCSE exams Dutch , English language and statistics However in year 11 I want to be homeschooled as we are moving to Dubai . I was wondering if I could continue with the same exam boards and syllabus as my school that I am enrolled in now . Also where would I get the recourses from to homeschool and how would I know why a recourses to get and how how would I enter or signup for my exams ?
i’m currently 15 years old and have been to a phycatric ward for 6 months for my depression and bpd. I haven’t been in normal education wince year 8 and I find going to school a big herdle for me . I am at a stepping stone school at the moment but my 12 weeks is almost up and they want to basically just throw me back into main stream school. Though I understand the situation , I don’t want to get ill again and I think school would just not help . I want to go to college and do my GCSES there as people are more mature , they want to be there , and I really don’t want to give up my education . Is going to college to take my gcses at 15 impossible ??
Hi, I’m fifteen and have recently been unable to go to school because of anxiety. My mum has phoned the school but they refuse to send work for me home and it is really worrying my because I really value my education is there anyway for me to learn my GCSE work without having to be thrown into an environment with a lot of people?
If the school is refusing to provide work, you need to arrange a meeting to discuss the way forward – this may involve encouraging/ supporting your child to attend. If necessary, speak with your Local education Authority as well
I am writing because I’m concerned of what my possibilities are at college and what I can choose to do, currently I am getting home schooled but do find it quite challenging I haven’t learnt much at school for when I have been there and have forgotten pretty much everything I’m probably meant to know for my GCSEs this worries me greatly, I can’t go to school because of reasons I wouldn’t really like to say but basically no schools would accept me due to my old younger self behaviour but now i was wondering if I don’t take sit my gcses this year can I redo my gcses at college with a proper teacher next year and then sit my gcses at college? I would love to be in proper education right now but I have messed that up for myself so yeah can I redo my gcses all at college for free of charge?
Yes this should be feasible. It’s really good to learn that you have recognised that your previous behaviour was not great and want to do better.
Hi all, my daughter 16 is moving from South Africa to UK in about a month, are there any suggestions for her to get her GCSE and what subjects are required. Many thanks
Hi, I was just wondering if anyone could tell me where homeschooled students take their GSCE’s. Do they have to go into a school or can they take them at home?
You would normally have to go into a school or an exam centre. Contact the relevant exam boards and ask them.
Hello My child has been homeschooled for 3years . W e dont think we have done enough work but my daughter wants to catch up and go back to school. Would this be possible at such a late stage year 10 .
It may still be possible. You could try employing a private tutor in the interim period. Contact the school that your daughter hopes to return to and ask them for information about what needs to be done.
I was just wondering, my friends daughter has just stared being home-schooled and apparently she don’t have to teach her daughter science, is this true? thank you
Hi, my son is home-schooled and would like to do GCSE’s in the science subjects but I keep hearing that he can’t do GCSEs in science because he would not be having the practical elements as he is home-schooled . Is this true? Can he only do IGCSE then for the science subjects?
Home schooled children are expected to be provided with “broad/efficient full time education”. While subjects are not listed specifically, an education would not be considered very broad without any science.
My daughter currently attends Sixth Form, she is in her first year of a-levels and would like to be home schooled. Do you have any ideas where I can get advice and support?
My daughter is currently studying R.E., Sociology and Psychology.
Hi, I’m in the middle of year 10 and I hate the thought of going to school, it really frustrates and upsets me about having to go. I often fall out with my parents about not wanting to go. I would like to get homeschooled but I don’t know if we could afford it. Do you have any advice?
Hi I am 13 years old and don’t wanna go school ….I can’t cope with children and I feel better working alone but my mom says it is impossible for me to be homeschooled what do I do and I’m going in year 9 soon.i hate going school I need help …
After reading comments from kids on here, my heart truly goes out to you, my 12yr old daughter came home today crying from frustration at her school, she has been previously home schooled & just decided to do lots of work over summer to see if she can sit GCSE’s over the next few years. I can only tell you what I tell her, turn every lesson in to something you love, my daughter wants to be an Architectural engineer, so every subject homework she bases it on that, it’s so frustrating adults have forgotten what it’s like to be a kid, where so much is expected of you and you get no respect in return, I hope one day I’m able to launch an idea I’ve had for a while of something to replace schools, where you pick the things you love to do and core subjects are taught in relation to those things, and you are all taught real life skills…I know you must feel stuck right now, but maybe write yourself a list of the things that anger/stress you and work out how you can change your reaction to those things, focus on the things you do have control over
My daughter has been homeschooled for the last 18 months due to severe bullying at mainstream school. She would be going into year 11 after this summer holiday. She wants to go back to school but no school will take her due to her going into year 11. Can she go to college instead and sit her GCSE’s in maths and English there? If so, how do I go about this? Thank you.
Most colleges will only take pupils over the age of 16 / in year 12. Ask your local education authority (usually the council or county council) for help with this. It’s worth checking with local colleges too as some FE colleges have been given funding for 14 – 16 year olds in recent years.
We have just returned to the UK after 9 years in New Zealand. My children’s NCEA (NZ educational standards aren’t recognised here) I want to school my 17 and 19 year old through GCSE math and English but I really don’t know where to start. Can anyone advise?
hello i just turned 16 and m in year 11 and i am thinking about leaving school because of many ongoing issues, however i do not know how i would go about my GCSEs. is there anywhere else i could go for private one to one lessons or who should my parents talk to about a tutor coming to my house and teaching me everything i need t know??pat
Your parents can search locally for private tutors – there are also some agencies that offer private tuition as well.
Hi there, My son has just started year 10. For the past 3 years he has been educated at a vocational school as a dancer but due to a few reasons (anxiety, food restriction & homesickness) we decided that he should come home and go to a main stream school. During the summer holidays he was mugged and had his mobile phone stolen so his anxiety levels are extremely high and he is struggling with insomnia, depression etc for which we are getting help from the GP. He hates going to school as everything is out of his control and has repeatedly asked if he can be home schooled. I work full time so am worried he wont get the support he needs. I also have no clue where to start if we do decide to go down this route. Can anyone please give me some advice?
My daughter for some personal reason she left U.K. When she was end of learning yr 10 but in three months time she wanted to come back to uk to finish her gcse can she come and join in the Same school to finish her gcse orlesle is there any other way to finish her gcse.I worried because of her age she is 15 now,can anyone advise me about what to do.
hi,I am 14 years old and starting my GCSE’S,I really dislike school but I’m not just like any other child that hates school. I suffer badly with anxiety and bad panic attacks and it’s getting to me now when I go into do my first exam In January I will take a panic attack,I really don’t like school and I told my mum I’m not going back..
You really need to talk to your teachers about this. There may be someone who can help, by offering counselling, therapy etc. Your form tutor or a welfare or pastoral advice person would be a good place to start. They could also help you look at options like combining home study with some time in school etc
Hi, I’m age 15, I’ve been suffering with anxiety and bad pannick attacks for about 2 years now, I really dislike school, not just because I’m a teenager but because I genuinely can’t cope any longer, I’ve asked for help from teachers, and they gave me a time out card we’re I can go to a quite room when ever I feel down and anxious, this did help at first, but I feel like it’s getting worse, I really don’t won’t go school and I’m sick of how I’m feeling all the time, I have to go school, but sometimes I just can’t cope at all
Talk to the teachers or your parents again. They may be able to refer you to a GP who can help with counselling etc. Home schooling is only useful if you have someone who can provide tuition for you.
Hi, I’m 15 (year 11) I haven’t had any education since the middle of year 9 due to being sectioned 4 times for mental health reasons, it’s close to GCSE time for everyone and I’m panicking because I’m not even enrolled with a school. I really want to go to a art and design college because becoming a Fashion Designer is my dream, but the qualifications to get on the course are ; 5 GCSEs grade 9-5 and maths and English at a minimum grade 4, and a portfolio of artwork and written work. What can I do???
Talk to someone at your local education authority (this is usually your county council or local council). If you are in contact with any of the teachers at the school where you’re registered, they may be able to help with some suggestions too. Do you have a support worker at all? Have you mentioned your education to them? Get some adults on the case to help you out with this, you don’t need to do it alone.
Hi My daughter liver with her mum, Weve been seperated a few years. My duaghter is 15 and being homeshooled as she suffers from terrible anxiety and depression. Her exams are cuming up next year and im concerned about her sitting her gcse’s. Her mum is not putting pressure on her to do them and said shes probably going to do them when shes ready at college. I was just wondering on the law and if she has to sit them when she is 16 or she can do them when she tries college. Thanks
There are no laws surrounding the education that a child receives if they are home educated. Some local education authorties are more engaged with home schoolers than others and might take action if they do not consider you to be giving a “suitable” education.
Hey, I’m 14 and I’ve just started my gcse year (it’s coming up to Christmas). I find my school atmosphere so stressful and unbearable. The sheer thought of going to school makes me feel physically sick. I luckily have a great and highly supportive family which helps so home if a very happy place for myself. I am really considering online schooling because I’m so far behind on some of my gcse choices and feel that I should t be taking them anymore. I’m really not sure of what to do? Any suggestions?
Hi. I’ m 16 and I’m homeschooled. I am one year back because I went to an independent private school. I wasn’t really educationally active in between year 7-9 but I made that up in school. Now I have literally a few months left and I’m in need of help. Unfortunately my parents are not that supportive and cause of cultural stigma I’m not sure if they are going to. Please help. Thank you. What can I do.
I’m 16 and just started school again after being off for two weeks due to having teeth extractions. I physically can’t bare to be at school anymore, I’m so unhappy and I can’t bare the thought of going there. I really need some advice on home schooling
We have had to relocate to another town and my daughter is 15 in year 11 and I can’t get her into another school. She’s not academically minded and has a college interview tomorrow Forbes a courses in sept that doesn’t require gcse students for entrance and does maths and English GCSEs along side her course. Do I legally have to registers her for gcses? Can she just be homeschooled with me til exam time? Thank you
My son turning 15 next April. He is doing very well and ready to set IGCSE this June. However, we live overseas and we have to go back to UK in the middle of his exams as I have to leave job. I don’t want my son to spend next year for IGCSE as he is prepared very well. How can he set October November diet ? I asked colleges and schools and they advise him to join for year 11 to be able to set exam next year. Can he set as private candidate and home education? Regards
I am 15 years old and i have had a very difficult past, i have been kicked out of school due to some problems and i have not been in a mainstream school since October 10th 2017. During my time in school, i have had a lot of people strive to bring me down, quite a lot of the times they have succeeded in this. I have honestly tried my hardest to work and study on my own, but i keep on getting distracted by social media. There was a big problem that kept on disturbing me, this was i listen to a lot of songs with vocals in them, so i decided to only listen to music that is just instrumental because then i wont focus more on the lyrics. I have missed out on a lot in school but i am really trying my hardest to build up my knowledge once again. i would like to know what i can to do to help me pus forward
I’ve got a 15 year old who is in year 10 now She hate school with a passion . From year 7 she been bullied which involve the police .since then she thinks of every excuse not to go . The school never once stood buy her when she was bullied. She wants to leave and do her gcse at collage .but don’t know where to start to get her in. Birmingham
I’m 15 this month, I’ve struggled with public schooling since year 7, I suffer with anxiety and depression and I have a couple of fake friends in school which until a few weeks ago I didn’t even realise school made it 10 times worse. In school holidays I’m myself but in term time I’m constantly in that “dark hole” I’m panicking and missing a lot of classes and crying myself to sleep most nights. I really want to be homeschooled but it seems really complicated and we don’t have the money for online schooling and my parents don’t have the time to tutor me, any advice would be appreciated
Please talk to the person in charge of pastoral care at your school. They will be able to discuss your options. Your parents could also try talking to your council’s education welfare officers to ask whether there is any help locally for home schooling etc.
Since the beginning of year 7 till now (year 10) I have had nothing but trouble at my school, to the fact that I constantly break down in tears when I get home to show my mum how much I don’t want to go is there a course I can take for my maths English and science gcse? And by law is that allowed? I need help please
Talk to your school or local education authority if you feel you cannot continue. They will be able to provide you with addtional support or perhaps alternative options.
Hi My 15 year old daughter who should be on course for taking 9 GCSEs this year with predicted grade B or above. She fell ill 4 years ago and hasnt been able to attend school. She will only have 3 GCSEs at the end of this current academic year and I can not find out how to get her either studying for 2 more GCSEs (psychology, sociology and/or criminology) or A levels of the same subjects. I can not home school her. Any thoughts? Regards PRE2612
My yr 10 daughter suffers with terrible anxiety. School have been patient and done all they can to support her, care plans, reduced time table. She is under CAMHS. I am now considering home educating her to at least get her through math and English GCSEs. She is very intelligent but unable to cope in the school environment. I am worried as to whether this the right move. What help is out there. Could she continue with art GCSE? Where on earth do I start ?
Hi I am 15 years old and like a lot of comment I have read i have really bad anxiety and feel like my mom’s not taking it seriously.I cry before school most nights and I’m really anxious about tests,I have my mocks coming up next week and I don’t think I can make it through it,I really want to be homeschooled but my mom doesn’t like the social aspect of it.any advice?
I am 15 and was very depressed at my old school for around 7 months, so when things were at its very worst we decided to move. However my new school doesn’t feel like it fits me at all. It’s a private school and The culture is so different and I feel very restricted and like I can’t be myself, as well as the students being very different to me. On my first day I came home crying. We’re now looking into home schooling but it’s hard cause I have my GCSE exams next year. Can you still get good grades being homeschooled?
I am 13 years old, for at least a year now I have been feeling really down, I have a medical condition and it makes me feel really down about my self however, I can not cope in school any longer- my mom is really supportive with this and says we’re going to see how the summer holidays go then if they don’t go well we’re considering to go into home schooling I need advice the subjects you can take when home schooling
My grandson is 15 and I am about to start home schooling with him as he has struggled to cope with school since year 7. He thinks home schooling will be good for him as he says he is too easily distracted in the classroom. He is not worried about the social side as he is a very confident lad socially and has friends. Could someone tell me how I book him into an exam centre and which exam I should be choosing for him to sit for English and Maths as this is my only worry in terms of home schooling. Laura. 8/7/18
So sad to read some of these comments. I took my son out of school at the end of Year 10 due to his depression and anxiety. School had tried everything to help but he was on a downward spiral. He was also receiving support from CAMHS which was amazing. I work 4 days a week so I wasn’t sure how I would manage to home school him effectively. All I knew was that we couldn’t continue as we were. He immediately dropped 2 GCSEs so that he was only learning 7. I spoke to the school and checked which board they were using for each exam, then I bought from the internet the Student Guide, revision and exam style questions in each subject. School were very supportive and allowed him to take his exams there along with the other children but they allowed him to enter the exam room first so that he wasn’t overwhelmed with queuing with the rest of the children. School booked him on the exams and I paid them a small fee to do this. I split my day off into two half days so that I could be with him for at least part of 2 days. My mum had a day with him each week, initially doing fun non curriculum activities but later on she helped him with some revision. I employed a tutor for his language GCSE from the start but he taught himself 3 subjects and I taught him the other 3. I taught myself the subjects I was teaching him from watching U-Tube videos. By the time he took his exams he was confident and happy. He gets his results on Thursday and is now excited about his future. Home schooling him was the best decision I ever made.
I’m 16 in October and home educated, wasn’t planning on doing any GCSEs as I don’t need them for the profession I want to learn. If I decided I wanted to get a Maths and English Language GCSE would it be too late??
It’s never too late to take qualifications in English and Maths, it’s handy to have them if you decide to change career anyway. Ask at local FE colleges and 6th Form colleges to find out how you can go about this.
I’m 14 and in Year 10, is it possible to move to homeschooling even though I have already started some of my GCSE courses? I don’t fit in at school anymore and feel really left out all my best friends have got other best friends which they’d prefer to be around so I’m left on my own.
If you have someone (a tutor etc) who can provide you a suitable education/supervision, this is possible. We suggest however, that you talk to your form tutor, head of year or pastoral team about your concerns first.
Hi .. like many of the other comments here we have also found ourselves in a position where our son currently year 11 is now out of school it was our decision to pull him out and begin the process of homeschooling him through his final year. Unfortunately the lack of qualified teachers at his last school, the drop in grades, making him have low self esteem and feeling under too much pressure eventually led us to this position we are now in. My husband and I both work full time so finding enough time to tutor him ourselves is hard we have now got a one on one maths and English tutor coming twice a week and actively looking for a science tutor but we don’t what to do as regards GCSE’S that are also marked on coursework ? We obviously want to best for him and any help or assistance we would be most grateful .. thank you
Just recently took my 13 year old daughter out of school now home schooling. How does she go about meeting other kids thst are in same situation for friendship, support etc would be grateful for ant advice.
Hey, I have just gone into year 11, meaning this is my final year until I do my GCSEs in June. However, I have just started doing homeschooling and have no idea what to do. Is there some curriculum that tells me what I should be learning? Do I have to talk to someone? Can someone please help me as time is of the essence. Also, I know that you are required to have at least 5 GCSE qualifications at grade c or above to do your A-levels but how many do homeschoolers need? Do homeschoolers have to take 5 GCSEs too? If so how do I go about taking those courses. For example, how do I do homeschooling for business studies? I’m really confused and any help would be amazing! Thanks, Scarlet.
Hi. We left UK for personal reasons and have relocated to Portugal. My 13 year old was devastated to leave his friends and has spent a year in a Portuguese school where he was treated dismally by a teacher because he could not communicate in Portuguese. Want to homeschool him for year 8 but have no clue where to start. His self confidence has gone from 10 to 0 and is displaying worrying signs of rage. Help please?
My son is 14 in year 10 and I’ve decided to home school him as he struggles with subjects were just going to concentrate on English and Maths he started his option Gcse in year 9 where do I start ? What do I need to do to get started haven’t a clue .
I live near Rugby and I want to resit my French GCSE exams. I have heard there is an exam centre in Coventry, can you tell me if this still exists? Or if there are any other exam centres nearby? Thank you.
Hi, I have home schooled my two children for ten years. It works for us as a family. Never allow anyone to question your decision on what makes your children happy, confident and spending more time with their parents.Avoid negative people and if this is not possible show you are confident in your decisions. After all, you taught then to walk, talk and learn, never underestimate yourself! I ordered a catalogue from Schofield and Sims. I mark off the books I have ordered for example KS1 Maths, KS1 English, KS1 Science and continue on with each subject as we learn. When my child is confident in that subject we move on. History, I use CGP Books, again marking off the subject in stages. I do the same for History with CGP. WHSmith have all the language books if you need them. Encourage sewing, cooking, first-aid, art, anything to encourage learning. Join a local Scout group, martial arts, visit museums, swim, pack a picnic and enjoy nature! Most of all enjoy watching your children learn and become confident. I hope this helps. All the best!
I have a 14 year old son who suffers with extreme anxiety and autism he has not attended school since September 2017. He is receiving teaching and learning support in a teaching centre and is still on his school role but is finding this increasingly difficult and is unable to attend. We were considering home schooling with IGCSE however my concern is he would not be able to get to an assessment centre to undertake the exams. Is there an option for him to undertake the exams at home?

Hey, I am in year 11 right now and have been struggling with anxiety since year 7. My school has attempted many times to give me support but they have all been quite half effort tries and were never effective. It’s gotten to the point that I vomit almost every day before school and without access to my phone under any circumstances at school although I have friends, I feel no escape from the horrid place. I would really like to enrol in an online GCSE course to finish year 11 successfully however I have no idea where to start; I have been on some websites that offer online GCSE’s but they all say to just sign up an that’s the end of it however surely I have to inform my school? and aren’t there legal requirements for the number of hours spent at “school” – (online studying) – a day? If anyone could fill me in on the process of moving got online schooling i would be really grateful.
I live near to Wrexham and this is not my born country, I am 17 years old in year 11and I live here from 1 year and I am really confused about this because I don’t know what I can do because is different between England and Wales and no one knows what I can to do to move on to home studying and I really need help from someone who know
Homeschooling my daughters. Firstly, do not worry about homeschooling and the law. If you are currently in high school and want to leave. You will need your parent/carer to send a letter into the head teacher saying this: Dear ……. From the 22nd Jan (or whatever date) I am withdrawing my daughter/son (your name) from (high school name). Thank you for all your support during their time at the school. I shall now be homeschooling and will inform the local authority of my decision. We wish you all the best. Many thanks (Name of Parent & Sign) It is that simple. You do not have to explain any reason why you are withdrawing from school. You will more than likely get a phone call from the school trying to get you to stay there and offering lots of amazing things they can do! Its all about them not wanting it on the record that they have lost another pupil. Secondly, you need to get your parent to send another letter or a quick email to the local council/authority. You need to address it to the ‘home education department’. Again tell them you are withdrawing from school. Add a little more detail in. So my daughters do the online study with ICS Learn and Cloud Learn and sit one GCSE a year. Give them the information about the course. Legally, you do NOT have to engage with the home education professional. You do not have a legal requirement to visit them or let them visit you in the family home. I refused a home visit and told them if they have concerned I am not educating my kids correctly then they will need to provide a legal reason. They wrote back agreeing that that could not make me engage with them. What you do need to do is have a plan. So what are you studying in your first year? Who are you studying with(online/private tutor)? What are you doing for fitness? What are you doing to maintain friendships? Don’t be aggressive with the local authority as they will feel you have something to hide. Be smart and let them know your plan. Each year you will get a friendly email to ask how you’re getting on. I send the woman an email back with details how the homeschooling is going and if they did a GCSE I tell her. Everyone has a misconception about homeschooling. But it is as simple as that – Send two letters, one to high school and one to the local authority. If you are at primary school you don’t need to send anything. You just simply leave. You will have your vaccination letters in the post when they are due and you have them at the doctors. When you want to sit an exam. Google ‘Local Private Candidate colleges’ and book with them. Its cheaper than the online course booking with them. Lastly, don’t be fobbed off with the pastoral care department at high school. They told me they will place my daughter in a single classroom for a couple of weeks. That is not the answer to all the problems she was having. She was really stressed at the time. If you’re not happy in school if you have issues and can’t cope in a school enviro

Although I have found a coursework free GCSE. How can you meet the spoken language element of an AQA English Language GCSE if you are being homeschooled in South London?
My 15 year old daughter has been having a lot of issues with her school and has had problems with her attendance so I was wondering if there was any chance she could take her GCSE exams at a college of her choosing and how we would go about it. Regards Michelle Austin
Hey, I have just gone into year 11, meaning this is my final year until I do my GCSEs in June. However, I wanted to start homeschooling and want to know how it works and how i will be able to get in to it:)
@blue Thank you so much for your homeschooling advice. That was a huge help and I have now taken the first steps and de registered my son from high school. Could you please tell me if you prefer ICS or Cloud Learn? Many thanks.
Hi. I am 17 years old and I did not pass exams in college I want to take exams again in November, I want to pay for it
Hi Is there any special consideration allowed in marking for home schoolers taking GCSEs My daughter attended at a local centre which was very stressful at the time. Thanks
Hi my daughter as problems with her secondary school she as just how into year 11 her last year I’m thinking of taking her out and home schooling as I’m fed up with going in for meetings and them putting the blame on my daughter.how do I help her with school work and how do I get her to do her GCSE where would she go to do them and do anyone need to come out to see us
Hi KAMMY, I am in the same situation. I have just de registered my child yr11 from school. You need to write an official letter to de register your daughter, to the head teacher. You do not have to give specific reasons . Go to the website education otherwise.org , it’s extremely helpful and they have sample letters to download, just fill in the blanks, your name, daughters name etc. Cliick on download resources. The school will then inform the local authority. Apparently they might or might not request a home visit but will want to see some proof of home education, this could be an email or in writing. Check the site I mentioned out because it will give you the correct advice for when this happens. My child is doing English and Maths gcse online with ISC learn but you have to pay, they do monthly instalments. From 16, you will be able to get your daughter to do gcses in a college for free. Try and find advice from your local connexions. Hope that helped a bit. Good luck.
KAMMY forget to mention, you can refuse a home visit but it’s a good idea to keep them informed of your home education plan.
i have a 16 year old son who is doing UAL level 2 at college in creative media. he did ok in his GCSE’s but got a 1 in his maths as he has dyscalculia – he hates his maths lessons at college and has started to miss his lessons which is unlike him – am i by law allowed to home school him in maths – i am an art teacher secondary school qualified –
My 15 year old is in her last year in school but for the past 2 years has had nothing but problems with the teachers she is now asking if I can home school her and pull her out as she has had enough of being blamed for everything when she ain’t done it. Can I put her forward to into college to finish her education. Any help is greatly appreciated
My daughter suffers from severe anxiety at school so we are taking her out of school I understand all about home schooling but how do I go about getting her in to college in February 2020 when she actually is 16 to do her English and maths Gcse Many thanks
Hi , My 14 yr old daughter is having nothing but problems with teachers and students alike. The school seem to be doing nothing and she is also asking to be home schooled any advice greatly appreciated as she now has stopped going in all together very stressful
My kids 12 and 14 both have additional needs, my daughter has irlen syndrome and wears coloured glasses and dyslexia and she is autistic and my son i believe is aspergers and struggles in silence as he is scared of getting told off for asking for help, but no one is helping them at school. My daughter is in isolation alot because of silly things like talking and doodling and generally not been able to control her autism traits alot of her traits are stimulants like drawing. she has drawn some small circles in her planner because she was stressed out in a test now this is classed as graffiti and if i dont buy another planner she will be isolated again until i do buy one. I am not sending her or my son to school again. I feel this is child abuse, to place children in a isolation booth all day is certainly against human rights. Schools these days are placing children with addtional needs in these isolation booths to remove them from been educated instead of putting funds into helping them with tactics or learning aids to help them. I feel they are doing this to make the school look good from the outside and justifying the abuse by including it in their behaviour policies. I am home schooling as of tomorrow.
Hi, am considering home ed for my 14 year old, she is in year 10, are there any active home ed groups in west london, we are based in wembley, my biggest fear is social isolation for my child, she also wants to pursue art so any idea on how to access art GCSE at college or private facilities? many thanks
Hi My 15 yr old is in year 11. He is diagnosed with ADHD and is going through the assessment for ASD. He is very bright and predicted 7, 8, and 9s in his GCSEs but despite many meetings/emails/conversations, school still fails to make reasonable adjustments and he is constantly misunderstood and ending up in isolation. It is seriously impacting his mental health and his confidence. We are thinking of deregistering him and getting him through the next 6 months with homeschooling. If we did this, how can we register him for his exams on the same exam boards that he has been studying and with the current access arrangements that his is entitled to please?
Hi could someone please tell me what books I need to get for gcse maths and English for my daughter I have decided to homeschool her after he school refused to deal with the constant bullying , any help given would be very much appreciated , thank you

She has been have trouble with anxiety and depression since year nine but has battled through it. She’s a had working student who is predicted 6-7s. I just have questions about how and where she will be able to do her GCSEs and what’s involved and most importantly can we do it?

Hi I’m thinking of home schooling my 14yr old daughter as she suffers terrible anxiety and school really triggers this but I don’t have a clue where to begin? I don’t know what subjects she needs to do and I don’t have a clue about exams and things as she will want to do performing arts at college when she turns 16 Would love to talk to somebody for help and advice
My son is in his last year at school, and he has never really done well at school, he just doesn’t fit into the conformity of school life. I am really worried that he’s going to come out of school with nothing, and there doesn’t seem to be an option for him to do less GCSEs. I would prefer he just concentrate on English, Maths and possibly Science. Therefore, I am wondering whether homeschooling him would be best to concentrate on the 3 topics, or perhaps even doing functional skills instead. Any suggestions or advice would be great.
Hi, my daughter is currently in year 11. She thrived during lockdown and is now really struggling with anxiety since returning to school. It doesn’t help that her school is staid in their approach to mental health and generally quite archaic. I’ve reached out for help but all they’ve done is focus on her 2 small blue Strips of hair, dyed during lockdown, that are gradually fading. My daughter is predicts grades raging between 6-8, and has already attained an 8 in English language. She is struggling to hit some of her targeted grades currently (maths, science and Spanish.) I just don’t know what to do for her best. Myself and my husband work (me part time) and I don’t feel equipped to support her to achieve her full potential, but equally I can see her decline with each day. Many thanks
Hi My daughter became home educated from the beginning of year 11. She had a distinction star for her drama recording. Is there any way to do drama GCSE if she is home schooling? She is very disappointed, because drama is her favourite subject and she is afraid that she put all of her effort to achieve a good grade from drama for nothing. Please help us! Maria

My son is 14. He has always struggled at school academically and socially. Since school has re-opened after lockdown he has been off more than he has attended. He hates school. It triggers his anxiety and causes him to kick off. I am debating wether to take him out and get a tutor a couple of times a week for just English and Maths to help with his GCSE’s. He wants to do a mechanics course so will need to take the exams. I know if I force him to return he will bunk off and end up being locked out anyway. I don’t want this to happen. He is so content as home. Loves to work! Very hands on. He is very Grown up for his age. If he could leave school and work he would because that’s where he thrives. I’ve had endless sleepless nights over education concerns. I don’t know where I stand with the authorities and education department if I take him out of school and only tutor a few times a week English amd maths. Please help x
Hi Parent/tutors Looking for some helpful advice. My daughter is 15 has had to love schools twice due to bullying. Suffers from anxiety and the school have been no help. Not that im blaming them at all they just dont have the staff to help. Sofi would be sitting her exams next year. Since we have went back after lockdown her anxiety is through the roof and she is begging me to home school her. I would prefer to take her put of school and grt her a tutor and get her into college when she turns 16 to sit her exams. I really just need advice on the best places to look at and how to fo about it. Thank you so much for reading and I hope to hear from someone soon. Michelle.
Between October 2019 and March 2020 my 15 year old grandson was being bullied and blackmailed to pay money to an ex pupil at his school. We noticed a big differance in his mood over this time but did not know why, until he broke down and told us. Because of this he has not been abble to attend school since it started back in Semtember this year. The ploice have been involved but it is going nowhere as of yet. My grandson has really struggled. We are having to home school him for 4 subjects every week, some lessons neeeding two a week. This is so exspensive, his mum and dad are seperated so we are all pulling together to help. Is there any financial help available anywhere? Thank you.
Hi, My Grandson has dyslexia, possible autism and is in year 11, since going back to school after lockdown (which was bliss for him) he has not managed at all. He has been crying and not sleeping. I want to home school him, as his Mother is on her own and works full time. I want to know how I go about his exams?
My daughter suffers from anxiety so she has poor attendance at school she is very bright but the school wants her to leave because of her attendance how do I go about her sitting exams don’t want her to have no exams need advice please
I took my oldest out of school from yr 1. My son has never been to school. My wife and I home educate them. There are clubs like London School of Mathematics who are very good with maths and computers. My children attended on Saturdays. We followed the curriculum by buying book on the subjects we thought interest our children. IGCSE exams for Home Educated and some private schools use Edexcel board. Bromley Tutorial Foundation is where our daughter sat her exams and so will our son, very good with children. We use sites such as BBC bite size, Khan Foundation, Maths is Fun, Conquer Maths and YouTube. I hope this has helped.
take your kid out, what the hell. Is there really need to think about? Jesus its only school wtf
